CPAC Releases Alabama Legislative Scorecard, Revealing a Mixed Combination of Wins and Losses for Conservatives from the Legislature.

ALEXANDRIA, VA (January 8, 2024) — CPAC Foundation’s latest analysis shows that the scores of Alabaman Republicans voted in a manner consistent with their performance in previous sessions, resulting in another somewhat lackluster year for conservatism in Alabama. Overall, Republican legislators received an average score of 76%, trailing behind other Republican-led legislatures in the region.

“Alabama’s promotion of school choice and protection of women’s sports this past session should be celebrated,” said CPAC Chairman Matt Schlapp. “However, the legislature’s relatively limited success in other areas suggests that Republican legislators and Governor Kay Ivey should do more to live up to their potential.”

CPAC recognizes several lawmakers in the Alabama State Legislature earned CPAC’s Award for Conservative Achievement for voting with the conservative position at least 80% of the time during the 2023 session.

Senate:

Sam Givhan (89%)

Tim Melson (89%)

Arthur Orr (88%)

Dan Roberts (88%)

Shay Shelnutt (88%)

House:

Ben Harrison (82%)

Jim Hall (80%)

The bills featured in CPAC’s 2023 Ratings of Alabama increased election security, strengthened national security, supported parental rights in education, and promoted women’s sports. These issues, coupled with our mission to protect life, liberty, property and uphold the American family, created the basis by which the CPAC Foundation rated the Alabama legislature.

The Center for Legislative Accountability (CLA), an initiative of the CPAC Foundation, is the premier organization for holding lawmakers accountable. The CLA produces the longest-running conservative congressional scorecard and our state program is the only one in the nation that scores all 8,000 lawmakers in the 50 states across every policy area.
