ACU Foundation Releases Latest Scores of Virginia General Assembly

A total of 39 lawmakers in the Virginia General Assembly qualified as conservatives during the 2020 legislative session — a dramatic increase from the 16 who qualified as conservatives the prior year, according to scores released by the American Conservative Union Foundation.

The Republicans in the state House improved their average conservative voting record, while Democrats in the House became more radical.

The news in Virginia presents a different image than the one presented in the national news. “While the national news media has written off Virginia as full blue, our ACUF Ratings show a different trend,” said ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp. “The 2020 session saw 23 more legislators voting consistently with conservative values than in the previous session. We believe this is an interesting development as the commonwealth elects statewide officials, including its governor this year.”

The American Conservative Union Foundation conducts an annual, in-depth analysis to rate all 8,000 lawmakers in America, revealing their positions on a wide variety of issues directly affecting our communities and families.

Virginia has important statewide elections in November 2021, and ACUF’s ratings show conservatives have made significant strides in the state in the past year.

ACUF’s Ratings of Congress and Ratings of the States are initiatives of ACUF’s Center for Legislative Accountability (CLA). These ratings are designed to reflect how over 8,000 elected officials across the nation view the role of government while illustrating the differences between chambers of the legislature and revealing lawmakers’ positions on a wide variety of issues that directly affect citizens.

ACU Foundation reviewed each piece of legislation voted on in both chambers of the legislature to produce average scores of each chamber as well as individual scores for each sitting member.
